Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic healing modality that uses concentrated plant extracts (essential oils) to promote health and well-being.  Ancient cultures in China, India and Egypt utilized resins, balms and oils for medicinal and religious purposes.  Frankincense and Myrrh were referred to in the Bible. Cleopatra was known to utilize them as fragrances and part of her beauty regime. The term "aromatherapy" was coined by a French perfumer and chemist who discovered the healing power of lavender when he burned himself in his laboratory and serendipidously discovered that the essential oil helped heal his burn without scarring.

Essential oils have a therapeutic effect on the brain and the body.  When inhaled, the scent molecules travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and the amygdala, which is the emotional center of the brain.  They can have a positive affect on one's mental and emotional state, allowing one to calm the spirit and down regulate the nervous system.  Oils can also be absorbed through the skin, entering the blood stream, to bring balance to internal systems of the body.  Aromatherapy can be used to improve sleep, manage pain, reduce stress, combat depression and anxiety, alleviate nausea, improve digestion, and more.
