Frequently Asked Questions
What does acupunture feel like?
We use some of the thinnest filiform needles available that are designed for comfort for the patient. The experience varies from patient to patient, but for the most part patients report not having any pain, or feeling a momentary sensation as the needle is inserted which subsides immediately. I have treated many patients who have a fear of needles. I work with the patient to educate and alleviate their fears, by using various techniques to minmize discomfort including massage, breathwork, and a tapping technique.
How long does it take to get results?
This will depend on the person, the condition, and the nature of the issue. In general, if it is a more serious condition or you have suffered with a chronic condition, it will take longer to reset the body's patterns. It is important to have consistent treatments, once or twice a week, in order to see lasting results. We are trying to reset the body and balance the physical and physiological systems in the body. We usually recommend a series of 5-10 treatments for more chronic problems, depending on the severity and the duration ot the condition. Patients usually report relief within the first 1-3 appointments, but its important to remember that as we try to unwind imbalance, the body may be trying to resist and go back into imbalance. This is why acupuncture works cumulatively over time. A patient may feel relief immediately after a treatment, but a couple days later may start feeling pain again. This does not mean the treatment didn't work. We build upon each treatment and over time, these periods of relief will be long lasting. Occasionally, acupuncture can work quickly and all it takes is one treatment!
